Here are a few of our favorite shopping spots.
Why shopping local is so important. Several studies have shown that when you buy from an independent, locally owned business, rather than a nationally owned business, significantly more of your money is used to make purchases from other local businesses, service providers, and farms — further strengthening the economic base of the whole community.
Farmers Market – The Lexington Farmers’ Market operates a year-round market in Downtown Lexington in Cheapside Park and the area around the Historic Old Courthouse. While in the winter the number of growers that attend the market shrinks, by May the markets expands to over 50 farmers at seasonal locations that cover five days each week. Some of our farmers only come to the market during the peak seasons for their specialties, such as mid-summer for sweet corn or tomatoes, but others come year round with value-added or expanded product lines.
Good Foods Co-op – Good Foods Market & Cafe is a locally owned and operated cooperative business where everyone is welcome to shop. Good Foods has been in business in Lexington, KY since 1972. With a modest start as a buying club in a garage, we now have over 12,000 square feet of retail space in our Market & Café.
Wheelers Pharmacy – Wheeler Pharmacy is a family owned and operated business out of Lexington, KY. We have been operating for over 50 years and have expanded our services exponentially with the growing demands and needs of the Pharmaceutical industry. While you are there you must try the Wheeler’s Fountain! They serve breakfast and lunch, Monday through Saturday and offer many specialty items, such as the Buddy Burger, scrumptious milkshakes, and homemade salad and soups. The fountain hours are 9am-4pm, Monday through Friday, and 9am – 3pm on Saturday with the hot grill shutting down 30 minutes before closing each day. Here is a copy of their menu.
